Just broke on ESPN, reportedly 1 yr 8 mil with no option for a 2nd yr. This kinda pisses me off knowing he could of had 2 yrs 14mil with us and turned it down.

Detroit is stupid. Curtis Granderson is making $5.5 mil in 2010. Johnny Damon is making $8 mil now. Why did they trade Granderson in the first place? Why not just hold onto him for another year? Have fun trying to hit homers and play the field there Johnny.

Agreed. Stupid move.

Absolutely stupid - especially when their reasoning in trading Granderson was "financial". They basically turned Jackson and Granderson into Scherzer and Damon. I'm not sure that's an overall upgrade. I know Scherzer is supposed to have great stuff, but I don't know anything about him other than those reports.

Like you say, it's going to be different for Damon leading off in front of Polanco and Maggs in Comerica than it was hitting behind Jeter and in front of Tex and Arod in NYS. The power alley in Comerica is closer, but I think there is more room to roam in center in Comerica. Johnny's defense will make them miss Granderson.

A lot of people project Scherzer as a bullpen guy long term. I don't understand at all what Detroit is doing here.

8 mil is too much for Damon at this stage of his career.

What Boraas was asking for was crazy. I would've taken his bat and clubhouse presence for a 1/$8 million deal. We already have a DH though, so that made him expendable. I wasn't aware of this (and who knows if it's true) but on ESPN radio this morning I heard Boras initially wanted another 4 year deal at $13 million per year. If that's true, that's insane.

A horrible move for Detroit and for Damon personally. Detroit gets an aging outfielder that can't play defense and Comerica will only expose Damon's huge flaws. There is no way he plays anywhere near the value of his contract

Keep in mind Granderson was only making 5.5 million THIS year. Next year is 8.25, 2012 is 10 million, and then there's a 13 million option with a 2 million buyout. If Jackson can step in and replace him next year making league minimum (which I'm sure is the Tigers thinking), then they're saving 17.75 million over the remainder of the contract. For this year it looks really bad, but they probably thought they could get more for Granderson now than next year or 2012.

Also I hadn't heard Scherzer as a bullpen guy before. If that's the case then the Edwin Jackson part was a mistake, but I hadn't heard that. I'd heard they expect similar production but Scherzer is farther away from a payday.

That's why the Diamondbacks were willing to part with him. That was where they projected him.

I wouldn't, he'd probably end up hurt half the season. 8 mil is alot for a clubhouse presence and a few hits in the clutch.

When Damon signed with the Yankees, the Tigers were coming off their 12th straight losing season, 2 years removed from 119 losses, and 19 years since their last postseason appearance. If he said something like that, he's full of shit.

Someone made that up. First off from what I can tell he never even mentioned Boston. The quote in question was that the Tigers were his "first choice", he never said "back in 06...", that's made up. He later clarified that he meant to say the Tigers were his first choice this year after the Yankees were no longer on the table, so no reason for anyone to get pissed at him. Yankees were his first choice, Tigers second according to him. That may be bullshit, but he wasn't saying Tigers over the Yankees, now or in 06.

No problem, a bunch of sportswriters were correcting it on Twitter a little while ago. They were correcting the idea that Damon said Detroit was his first choice over the Yankees this offseason, which Damon clarified wasn't the case and they were only his first choice AFTER the Yankees. I have no idea where them being his first choice after the 2005 season came from, nobody was even mentioning that.
