Shawn Michaels Planning To Retire After Wrestlemania 26

Written by: Keelan Balderson - April 05th, 2009

Yesterday "Mr. Wrestlemania" Shawn Michaels was interviewed by Q101 in Chicago and revealed that he may end up retiring from the ring after next year’s Wrestlemania 26. He said that's when his contract expires and that he doesn’t know if his body can hold up any longer after the event. It will be interesting to see who his final match will be against.

On the flip side Triple H said Shawn often changes his mind on when to retire, and thinks if he can cut his schedule down that he'll be doing the odd match for years to come.

He did an interview here in Houston where he said he was retiring after next year's WM for sure, but would definitely return after his kids got older.

Who will his final match be against you think? Triple H is the one that comes to mind first.

I could see Shawn Michaels vs. Jericho. They always bring out the best in each other and Jericho was Michaels' opponent in his Wrestlemania comeback.

No way of knowing really. Maybe Kurt Angle? His contract is supposed to be up soon with TNA and I think he might jump back to the E.

When does Angle's contract run out? I'd love to see hm back in WWE with a more flexible schedule.

As for Michaels, it's amazing the guy is still as good as he is honestly. The guy has an screwed up back, knees, etc. but he's still IMO the best the WWE has in terms of pure wrestling ability. I hope they actually turn Michaels heel for one last run. He's so damn good at it.

Obviously HHH is the obvious answer on who he would face at Wrestlemania 26, but that's so far down the road that anything can happen between now and then.

I hope it's not HHH to be honest. HHH doesn't have much game left imo.

Shawn won't be heel again (or at least a credible one) Because of the whole "yay god" thing. No offense to religion but I don't think he'd try doing that heel route again

I don't think his religion will keep him from going heel. He played the heel role with Hogan and he played it up big time. He just won't do anything controversial, but with the new E PG mode he wouldn't have to.

I don't think he'd go heel because I doubt the fans would buy it at this point, and because this close to retirement I doubt he'd want to end his career as the bad guy.

Well the whole turning heel on Hogan was shit on too. Everyone loves Shawn too much to boo him.

No, he worked fine as a heel in that program and the crowds worked with him.

I completely forgot about this. This is very relevant considering it's a retirement match. I think we had been assuming he'd lose and come back in July/August. Anyone know if he changed his mind since or if his contract is still up after WM 26?

Speaking of Shawn, I got the new DVD. I'm on disc 3 right now. Good stuff, and frankly, that Montreal promo is worth the 20 bucks by itself.

Weren't there recent reports stating Michaels was gonna do something similar to last year after Wrestlemania? Take a couple months off, just in time for Summerslam.

I wonder if he does loses, will they have a similar celebration to that of Ric Flair?

Shawn's contract expires soon after Wrestlemania.... maybe he's decided its time to go for now to spend time with wife and kids? He's definitely earned that right for sure.

so I watched the end of the new Shawn My Journey DVD and add the end he seems pretty adamant about wanting to spend more time with his kids as they grow up. Now I'm not saying he's never gonna return (they always do),but I think WM 26 will be the last time we see him for a LONG time. I don't think its 6 months this time, I think it's at least 1-2 years.

If Shawn is really retiring (sure it gives away the match), but that in itself is worth the price of WrestleMania for me alone.

I'll never value wrestling the same again. Tonight is a say day for me. IMO the best or damn sure the closest has retired and you got hogan and flair still going on.. there is something wrong with thi picture. He's also still at the top of his game. With that said,t hank you Shawn and spend time with the wife and kids you deserve it.. We'll miss you. Thank you for the 25 great years.. Just epicness all around these last 2 nights for me.

I loved the honesty in his speech, he did hide anything. Very well done.
